Seen is the dormitory room at the Kanegafuchi factory, which we are assuming is located in Tokyo. Japanese farmer's daughters would usually come to boarding schools like this at the age of twelve or thirteen, and could eat lunch for 4 and a half cents. The caption writes, "Each mat is a bedstead.
